Gabrakhali Garo Hills: A Green Border Escape in Haluaghat

Gabrakhali Garo Hills is one of the calmest nature stops in Mymensingh district. Set in Haluaghat upazila, the Gabrakhali Garo Hills tourism center brings hills, forest, a lake and a view across the border into one place.

If you are tired of crowded city spots, Gabrakhali Garo Hills offers wide skies and quiet roads. Here is what to expect, and how to visit in a responsible way.

Where Gabrakhali Garo Hills Fits on the Map

Haluaghat sits at the northern edge of Mymensingh, next to the Garo hills of Meghalaya in India. Local reports describe Gabrakhali as a place where hills, a lake, forest and the border meet, with Bangladesh on this side and India on the other. The area belongs to the long Garo hills belt that also runs through nearby Dhobaura. Travellers who reach Haluaghat often notice the sudden change: green paddy fields, a dark line of hills on the horizon and fresher air. Gabrakhali Garo Hills is the best place to enjoy this view up close.

What to Do at Gabrakhali Garo Hills

Enjoy the Hill and Lake Views

The main reason to come to Gabrakhali Garo Hills is the scenery. Find a calm spot, sit for a while and let the landscape do the work. Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light and the coolest air.

Walk and Take Photographs

Photographers will enjoy the layered view of fields, trees, water and distant hills. Keep your camera ready for village life along the roads too, but always ask before photographing people.

See a Greener Gabrakhali

A plantation drive aimed at 100,000 saplings was launched at the tourism center by the Department of Environment in Mymensingh, with support from private and development partners and local officials. The goal is to protect biodiversity and make the area a better place for visitors. Over time, this should make Gabrakhali Garo Hills even greener.

Respect the Border and the Community

Haluaghat is a border area and home to Garo, Hajong and other communities, so visitors need to be mindful. The simple rules below keep the trip safe and kind for everyone at Gabrakhali Garo Hills.

  • Stay on public roads and marked visitor areas, and do not go near the border line.
  • Follow local advice and instructions from officials.
  • Ask before taking portraits, and do not treat villages like a stage.
  • Take your rubbish with you and keep the lake and trees clean.

Best Time to Visit Gabrakhali Garo Hills

November to February is the best window. The air is cool, the sky is clear and the hills are easier to see. Monsoon turns the whole area very green, but rain can make village roads slow and slippery, so plan extra time if you go in summer.

Plan Your Trip to Gabrakhali Garo Hills

Haluaghat is about 170 km from Dhaka by road and a long way north of Mymensingh city, so start early and treat it as a full day trip. Carry water, snacks and cash, as facilities are limited. A nearby cultural academy has been reported as unused for years, so do not plan your day around it. Pair your trip with the heritage sites in Mymensingh city on another day, and browse our Places to Visit collection for more ideas.

Calm, green and close to the Garo hills, Gabrakhali Garo Hills is perfect for travellers who like their trips quiet and real.
