Nazrul in Trishal: Walk Where the Rebel Poet Played His Flute

Nazrul in Trishal is one of the most touching literary trails in Mymensingh district. Long before he became the National Poet, a young Kazi Nazrul Islam spent part of his boyhood here, studying at a village school and playing his flute under a banyan tree. Today you can follow the same paths, one quiet stop at a time.

This guide explains the story of Nazrul in Trishal, the places to visit and how to make a respectful half-day of it.

Quick Facts

  • Suggested time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Good for: poetry and music lovers, students, history fans
  • Getting there: Trishal lies on the Dhaka to Mymensingh highway
  • Cost: local transport only, with little or no entry fee

The Story of Nazrul in Trishal

Nazrul was born in 1899 in West Bengal. In 1914 a police officer, Kazi Rafizullah, took the boy to his village home in Trishal so that he could study. Nazrul stayed at Kazir Shimla and joined class six at Darirampur High School, now known as Nazrul Academy. Later he moved to the home of Bechutia Bepari at Namapara, because the walk to school from Kazir Shimla was long. Accounts differ slightly on the exact length of his stay, but most say about a year.

The story of Nazrul in Trishal is also the story of a boy who loved music. Locals say he often stopped under a banyan tree on the way to school and played his flute.

Places to Visit on Your Nazrul in Trishal Trail

Kazir Shimla

The Kabi Nazrul Smriti Kendra here keeps memories of the poet’s first home in Trishal, including a cot said to have been used by him. It is a small, quiet centre, so go with an open mind.

Darirampur and Nazrul Academy

Darirampur is where the school stood, and it hosts the poet’s birthday programmes in May. Walk around the school area and imagine the daily walk of a young student.

The Namapara Banyan Tree

The old banyan tree on the campus of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is the emotional centre of the trail. Many students and visitors sit beneath it, and it is a lovely place to read a Nazrul poem or listen to one of his songs.

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University

The university was created in the poet’s memory in the area where he once lived. A short campus walk shows how a village memory became a living institution.

How to Make the Most of Nazrul in Trishal

  • Carry a small book of Nazrul poems or download a few songs to listen to under the banyan tree.
  • Visit during the day, since the memorial centres are small and may close early.
  • Go around 25 May, the poet’s birthday, if you want to see cultural programmes at Darirampur.
  • Be honest about expectations: reports say the memorial centres have limited memorabilia and few daily visitors.

Best Time for Nazrul in Trishal

November to February is comfortable for walking, while late May offers birthday celebrations. Monsoon can make village paths muddy, so plan extra time.

Combine Nazrul in Trishal With Mymensingh

Trishal is on the way to Mymensingh city, so you can visit in the morning and continue to Shashi Lodge or the Zainul Abedin gallery. For more ideas, browse our Places to Visit collection.

Gentle and thoughtful, Nazrul in Trishal is a trail for anyone who has ever hummed one of his songs.
