With the aim of advancing climate change adaptation and mitigation in Bangladesh, Eastern Bank PLC. (EBL), a prominent private commercial bank in Bangladesh, and the German Embassy in Bangladesh enter into a cooperative partnership to work on the “EBL Climate Change Action Award.”
The award is intended to honor and celebrate the best practices of regional manufacturing firms, corporations, non-governmental organizations, and climate activists who have shown excellence and leadership in carrying out climate projects and initiatives. It will be announced once a year.
Achim Tröster, the German ambassador, and Ali Reza Iftekhar, the managing director and CEO of EBL, signed the Joint Declaration of Intent.
Achim Tröster, the German ambassador to Bangladesh, stated: “Governments, the private sector, and civil society must collaborate in order to mitigate climate change and adapt to it. All participants in this endeavor must exercise leadership, be creative, and learn from one another. Therefore, we heartily applaud Eastern Bank Limited’s initiative to recognize such efforts in Bangladesh. EBL has been a longstanding partner of German Development Cooperation, which provides loans and technical support through private sector instruments. With the signing of this joint declaration of intent, we are pleased to step up our cooperation.”
“Germany and EBL share a common goal of promoting work to combat climate change challenges impacting Bangladesh,” stated Ali Reza Iftekhar, Managing Director of EBL. We are excited to collaborate closely to advance the climate cause as we launch our Climate Change Action Award initiative with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Our goal in giving this award is to encourage and inspire more actors to participate in Bangladesh’s fight against climate change.”
The award categories address many different industries and topics related to climate change issues that are important to Bangladesh.
A panel of judges, including professionals from academia, civil society, the media, and foreign partners like the German Embassy, will choose the winners.
The nomination process for the EBL Climate Change Action Award 2024 will be announced soon through the newspaper, electronic media EBL website, and social media platforms.
This was EBL’s second partnership. Earlier this year in May, EBL and the U.S. Department of State signed a partnership to collaborate on the EBL Climate Change Action Award.
