Raja Ram Temple Madaripur: A 17th Century Terracotta Treasure

Raja Ram Temple Madaripur stands in Khalia village of Rajoir Upazila, and it is one of the oldest temples in the district. It was built in the 17th century by Rajaram Rai, a member of the Khalia zamindar family and a devotee of the goddess Kali. Many people also know it as the Jora Bangla Temple.

It is not a famous tourist stop, and that is part of its charm. You arrive through village roads, not highways, and the temple appears almost like a secret waiting for quiet visitors.

The Story of Rajaram Rai and Khalia

The temple takes its name from the zamindar who built it. In the Bengal of that time, landlords often built temples to show faith and standing, and Raja Ram Temple Madaripur is a rare surviving example in this part of Dhaka Division. Standing in front of it, you can almost picture the village of Khalia in a different century.

The temple is two-storeyed, and much of its ground floor is now buried underground. That detail makes a visit feel special. You are looking at a building the earth has slowly started to reclaim.

What to Look For at Raja Ram Temple Madaripur

Terracotta Panels

The front of the temple carries terracotta panels showing scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Take your time here. Every panel tells a small story, and the best way to enjoy them is to look slowly, left to right.

The Double-Sloped Roof

Look up at the double-sloped roof. This bangla-style form is the reason the building is called Jora Bangla, and it shows how Bengal’s village huts inspired its temple architecture.

The Buried Ground Floor

Notice how the base sits lower than the ground around it. It is a quiet reminder of how many centuries this temple has lived through.

Painted Walls and Deities

Accounts of the temple also mention painted figures of deities on its walls. Many are faded now, so look closely and photograph them in daylight.

Rajoir and Kalkini Around the Temple

Rajoir is the smallest upazila of Madaripur by area, and it lies west of Madaripur Sadar. Kalkini sits to the south of Sadar. Together they offer village roads, river-country views and a slower pace. For more heritage, the district portal also lists Alagi Kazi Bari Mosque in Bahadurpur union of Madaripur Sadar. Travellers who love terracotta can also continue toward the Faridpur Sultani and terracotta heritage trail nearby.

Visiting Raja Ram Temple Madaripur Responsibly

Raja Ram Temple Madaripur is a heritage monument and a place of faith for the Hindu community. Ask before you photograph worshippers, and never touch or lean on the old terracotta. Do not climb on fragile walls, and take your waste with you. A respectful visit helps keep this site alive.

How to Plan Your Raja Ram Temple Madaripur Visit

  • Start from Madaripur town and allow about half a day for the round trip, with time at the temple.
  • Use a CNG auto-rickshaw or rickshaw van, and confirm the way with locals in Khalia.
  • Go in the cool dry season, since village roads and the temple surroundings can be muddy after rain.
  • Carry water, a hat and a small power bank, as facilities near the temple are limited.
  • Combine the temple with Madaripur Shakuni Lake for a balanced heritage day.

Who Will Enjoy This Trail Most

History lovers, photographers, architecture students and slow travellers will enjoy this trail. If you like quiet places with real age, Raja Ram Temple Madaripur is worth the extra village road.
