Atharabari Zamindar Bari: Tagore’s Day in Ishwarganj

The Atharabari Zamindar Bari is one of the least known heritage sites of Mymensingh, and it rewards travellers who like to go off the main road. Located in Atharabari, in Ishwarganj upazila, the Atharabari Zamindar Bari is remembered for a famous guest: Rabindranath Tagore, who visited in February 1926.

Today the old estate is also a campus, so the Atharabari Zamindar Bari feels like a living place, not a frozen museum. Here is the story and how to visit with respect.

The Story Behind the Atharabari Zamindar Bari

Local accounts say the area was once called Shibganj or Gobind Bazar. A zamindar named Deep Roy Chowdhury bought the estate in his son’s name and renamed the market Roy Bazar, and over time the area became known as Atharabari. The zamindar house is said to be around 250 years old, and Atharabari Bazar is still one of the busiest markets in Mymensingh district. The Atharabari Zamindar Bari grew with that trade.

When Tagore Came to the Atharabari Zamindar Bari

On 19 February 1926 (some reports say 18 February), Rabindranath Tagore visited the Atharabari Zamindar Bari at the invitation of Promod Chandra Roy Chowdhury, the zamindar, who had studied under him at Shantiniketan. A grand reception was held at Atharabari railway station, and crowds even stopped the poet’s train at Gouripur and Ishwarganj on the way. Local accounts say lunch was served with baul and jari-sari songs in his honour. Few heritage sites in Bangladesh can tell such a warm story about a student welcoming his teacher.

What You Will See at the Atharabari Zamindar Bari Today

The main gate opens to a large playground, and the old inner hall (Andar Mahal) lies further inside the campus. Beyond it you may find the Durbar Hall, the Kachari Bari and a traditional Ranipukur (queen’s pond) near the Kachari Bari. Because a college uses the site, parts of the Atharabari Zamindar Bari have changed with time, and a press report has described Tagore’s memory here as neglected.

Respecting the Campus

This is a working college. Visit during working hours, ask permission at the gate and avoid disturbing classes. The Atharabari Zamindar Bari is best explored slowly, with a notebook or a local guide.

Why the Atharabari Zamindar Bari Deserves Attention

Most of the district’s tourism talk centres on the city, but places like the Atharabari Zamindar Bari show the zamindari story at village-market scale. They also link Mymensingh with Tagore’s own life and his students. Visiting helps build local pride and interest in preserving such places.

Quick Tips

  • Start early, since the trip from Mymensingh city takes time.
  • Carry water and cash, as facilities in the village are simple.
  • Ask locals for directions to the old hall and the pond.
  • Photograph buildings, not students, unless you have permission.

How to Reach the Atharabari Zamindar Bari

Ishwarganj is about 24 km from Mymensingh city and roughly 147 km from Dhaka. From Ishwarganj town, Atharabari is further east, and local bus, CNG or a hired car can take you to the zamindar house. Allow extra time, and ask locals for the way to the college campus.

Best Time to Visit the Atharabari Zamindar Bari

November to February is best, with cool weather and drier roads. Monsoon rain can make village roads slow, so winter is the safer season for the Atharabari Zamindar Bari.

Plan a Zamindar Day

Pair the Atharabari Zamindar Bari with Shashi Lodge in Mymensingh city and the Muktagachha Zamindar Bari for a full zamindar-era route. For more ideas, browse our Places to Visit collection.

Quiet, literary and a little forgotten, the Atharabari Zamindar Bari is a place for travellers who enjoy stories more than crowds.
