Balapur Zamindar Bari is the kind of heritage site that shows both the glory and the fragility of old Bengal. Found in Balapur village of Paikarchar union, Narsingdi Sadar, Balapur Zamindar Bari was the grand home of a Hindu landlord family whose river trade once reached as far as Calcutta. Today, the mansion is weathered and partly damaged, yet it still draws visitors who love old architecture, quiet corners and stories of a lost era.
Who Built Balapur Zamindar Bari?
The mansion is linked to zamindar Nabin Chandra Saha. According to local accounts, he had three sons, Kali Mohan Saha, Ashutosh Saha and Manoranjon Saha. After his death, Kali Mohan, widely known as Kali Babu, took over the estate. Accounts differ on the exact date, and some sources mention 1906, while others speak only of the early twentieth century or older.
A Kali Babu also appears in the story of how Baburhat began, so you may hear locals connect the two. If you want to use that link in your own writing, check it with a local historian first.
A River Port and a Steamer Ghat
Balapur stands by the Meghna, and the estate grew around river trade. Local stories say steamers from Calcutta once stopped at a ghat near the village, and the zamindar watched goods being loaded and unloaded. A large one-storey building about two kilometres from the Balapur Zamindar Bari housed the steamer ghat. That river life explains why a landlord family built such a large house in a village.
What You Will See at Balapur Zamindar Bari
- A large complex with one-, two- and three-storey buildings, reported to hold over a hundred rooms.
- Decorative plasterwork, mosaic floors and patterned tiles.
- Carved wooden doors and windows, with wrought-iron railings on verandas.
- Large ponds on the western side, some with paved steps.
- A Durga Puja mandap on the eastern side of the complex.
- Balapur Nabin Chandra High School close to the mansion.
The Condition of the Mansion
Be honest with yourself before you go: this is not a restored museum. Reports over the years describe large cracks, collapsed ceilings and crumbling walls. In 2013, local authorities moved families out of the damaged buildings because of the risk. The Balapur Zamindar Bari has not been widely announced as a protected heritage site, and care of the buildings remains a concern.
