Parulia Shahi Mosque is one of those places that looks calm from the outside and carries a surprisingly personal story inside. Found in Parulia village of Palash upazila, Narsingdi, Parulia Shahi Mosque is a three-domed Mughal-era mosque, also known as Parulia Dewan Sharif Mosque. It has stood for around 300 years and still opens its doors to hundreds of worshippers every day.

The Story Behind Parulia Shahi Mosque

According to the inscriptions above its entrance, Parulia Shahi Mosque was built by Zaynab Bibi, daughter of Murshid Quli Khan, who later became the first independent nawab of Bengal. She built it after the death of her husband, Dewan Sharif Khan. Their graves now lie in a domed mausoleum right next to the mosque.

Sources differ slightly on the year. The Daily Star records 1128 Hijri (18th century), while another account gives 1126 Hijri, or 1714 CE. Either way, the mosque belongs to the early eighteenth century.

Why It Is Called Parulia

From around 1580 to 1722, the Narsingdi region was known as Maheshwardi. Large sailboats then passed along the nearby river, and people would gather on the bank to watch them. The name Parulia is believed to come from the Bengali words for flying sails. It is a nice reminder that this quiet village once looked out on a busy river trade.

What You Will See at Parulia Shahi Mosque

  • Three large domes on the roof, with a main entrance and several doors on the eastern side.
  • Two tall minarets in the north-east corner of the courtyard.
  • A fortified boundary wall around a spacious open courtyard.
  • Four large ponds with stone staircases, spread across a compound of about 12 bighas.
  • The domed mausoleum of Zaynab Bibi and Dewan Sharif Khan.
  • Ruins of old graves in the eastern corner.

Wear and Tear You Might Notice

An earthquake in 1904 cracked the roof and brought down Dewan Sharif Khan’s administrative house. The mosque was renovated in 1989 and restored again in 2012. A local committee looks after the complex, and the ponds are a main source of its income.

A Peaceful Corner of Palash

Palash is the smallest upazila in Narsingdi, better known for industry around Ghorashal. That contrast is what makes Parulia Shahi Mosque special. A short ride from busy roads, you step into old ponds, tall walls and a calm courtyard where time seems to slow down. Locals say the setting is especially lovely in the early morning, when the ponds are still and the domes catch the first light.

Visitor Etiquette at Parulia Shahi Mosque

This is a working mosque and not only a heritage stop. Visitors to Parulia Shahi Mosque should dress modestly, remove their shoes where asked and keep their voices low. Avoid walking around the prayer hall during prayer times, and ask before taking photos of worshippers. Early morning and mid-afternoon are usually the calmest times for photography.

Plan Your Parulia Shahi Mosque Visit

  • Time needed: about one hour for the mosque, mausoleum and ponds.
  • Best months: November to February for dry paths and soft light.
  • Getting around: sights in this part of Narsingdi are spread out, so private transport or a hired CNG makes the day easier.
  • Tip: ask locals for the road off Palash Thana Sadar Road toward Panchdona and Charsindur if your map app is unsure.

Combine Parulia Shahi Mosque With Other Stops

Palash also has the Miah Bari Mosque in Ghorashal and several old temples. From there, you can continue to Ashrafpur Mosque in Shibpur and Balapur Zamindar Bari on our Narsingdi historical places trail.
